I think that every Pastor has used the illustration of the man caught in a flood. I’m sure you know it…neighbor offers him a ride, he says, “No, God will save me.” Then waters rise, and someone in a canoe offers to help him and again he says, “No, God will save me.” Then a police boat comes for him and he says again, “NO, God will save me.” Now on the roof a helicopter comes to rescue him and he still says, “No thanks, God will save me.” Shortly after, the house broke up, the floodwaters swept the man away and he drowned. When in Heaven, the man stood before God astonished saying, “I put all of my faith in You. Why didn’t You come and save me?” And God said, “Son, I sent you a warning. I sent you a car. I sent you a canoe. I sent you a boat. I sent you a helicopter. What more were you looking for?”
I shared this story because God sent me a canoe and a boat and I almost missed it because I didn’t want to seem desperate, even though my needs were quite urgent. I posted a status (that didn’t even state my needs) on Facebook that a lovely women from my home church discerned as a need…and she was right. She sent me a message asking if I need help. I didn’t know how to respond. You see, my bills were paid til August 1st, but I was down to my last 10 lei (about $3). I was also not expecting funds until at least July 7th. I truly believed that God would provide and I would not go hungry (my colleagues here assured me of that.)
I prayed about how to respond to the message, a day past, and I was walking to church. I sensed God say in his oh so sweet voice…”are you waiting for a helicopter? This is my provision.” So, as soon as I got to church, I got on a computer and responded with my need. Not only did God use this wonderful women to meet my need, but He also laid it on a fellow missionary’s heart to give me 100 lei (which will feed me for a week, with a little leftover for mobile phone credit.)…the canoe and boat…haha!
I know that God could have sent manna down for me. I know I could live without a phone for a month, but God had other plans. He wanted these two ladies to receive the blessing of sacrificial gifting. He also wants me to be as fruitful as I can and being available to the girls with a mobile phone is part of that.
Let me leave you with this, my meditation verse that I was pondering on my walk to church. Titus 3:4-7 “But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
